Brancusi’s Kiss

Brancusi’s work is often a source of inspiration, particular his latter sculptures as they became more abstract. His approach as an artist is encapsulated in his statement “What is real is not the appearance, but the idea, the essence of things” My favourite pieces include the more simplified forms like ‘The Endless Column'. Edward Steichen's beautiful photo of the artist's studio reveals that it was a theme he worked on a number of times.

The rug design Embrace is inspired by Brancusi’s Kiss. He created a number of versions, the more simplified version was carved in Limestone in 1916 and is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art collection.
